September 2024 Newsletter
Over the past week, Northwest Tasmania has been hit with some wild weather, bringing challenges to our community and testing our resilience. Fierce winds and relentless rain have swept through the region, leading to the closure of our school last Friday when we had no power. Unfortunately, this meant that our students were unable to take home their carefully made Father’s Day presents. While this was disappointing for many, it would have resulted in a special Monday night, when the children finally presented their gifts to their dads or special people.
Despite the turbulent weather, our community came together over the weekend to ensure that two very special celebrations went ahead as planned. On Saturday night, we gathered for First Communion for six of our students. The church was filled with warmth and light, a stark contrast to the raging wind outside. The SPC Choir performed wonderfully, under the guidance of Laura Korpershoek, their music uplifting the evening and added joy to the occasion.
The celebrations continued on Sunday morning with Confirmation, another important milestone in the spiritual journey of our children. Nine of our children and four parish young people celebrated their Confirmation. The atmosphere was one of reverence and community, with everyone coming together to support and celebrate the young candidates.
Across the weekend we have shown that, regardless of the circumstances, we can come together to celebrate and support one another in the most meaningful ways.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the families, parish members, and staff who contributed to the success of these celebrations. A special thank you goes to Allison Wilson for her beautiful preparation of the children leading up to these important days. We also owe a great deal of gratitude to Kylie Monson for her incredible work. Additionally, we thank Laura Korpershoek, Brooke Lardner, Ange Hall and Melissa Thorp for their invaluable assistance with the organisation of both Masses and the setting up of the Confirmation celebration.
A special mention goes to the Bell family for their wonderful decorations in the church, which added a lovely touch to the ceremonies and enhanced the atmosphere of both events.
It truly takes a village to bring these moments to life, and we are so grateful for the unity and commitment our school community demonstrated to ensure these special events in the faith life of our children were memorable.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge officially finished in week 5 of this term, culminating with the book fair and book parade, with the school reading a total of 4,584 books! That’s a humongous effort! Well done to every student, parent, guardian and teacher that read during this challenge. Certificates will be given out to each student who participated in the end of term assembly on the 19th September, as well as some prizes for a few key readers. Students that have completed the challenge also go into a draw for winning a $100 voucher from the Premier himself! There are three to be won in the state. Just because the challenge has now come to an end, please do not stop reading! For the early years students, hearing and seeing words read really supports their development of language, and for those students who can read independently, your fluency and expression is developed the more you read.
As the term has progressed we have seen some great progress with students in Spelling Mastery and Corrective Reading, our Y3-6 literacy programs. Some students have moved to the next level in the process. Well done, it is so great to see outstanding progression in the literacy realm!

Recently at St Peter Chanel, we have begun undertaking the SoundScouts Hearing Screener with our Kinder and Prep students. This screener is undertaken on the iPad, with your child wearing headphones, as they complete three game based activities. At the completion of the screener, a report is automatically generated. This identifies whether your child’s hearing is within the normal range, borderline or outside the normal range. If your child’s scores are borderline or outside the normal range, a retest will be undertaken (often a few days later) to determine if the scores are correct. Following this, if the scores remain in these two areas, you will be notified and encouraged to seek a formal hearing assessment due to the importance of early intervention of hearing issues for optimal educational outcomes.
