As we near the end of Term 2 and approach further lifting of restrictions, we, the St. Peter Chanel Catholic School Community, wish to thank each and every one of you for rising to the challenges we have had to, and continue to face in these unprecedented times.
Our staff have been innovative and persistent with ensuring that learning has continued and enabled new ways of connecting with students and families.
Our students have been encouraging and uplifting towards each other. They have displayed responsibility for their own learning and the ability to take on diverse challenges.
Together, we have built new structures and practices that will last beyond COVID-19. Together, we continue to live the Josephite tradition for dealing positively with difference, negotiating fear, sharing resources and respecting the dignity of all.
SPC’s Vision and Mission links well to how we have responded to changes:
We respond to the need of each individual through our holistic approach to educating our students, to aim high and strive for success in an increasingly changing world.
To all of you, we say thank you!
Congratulations to the following students:
Kinder - Isla & Lucas
Prep - Milla & Brady
Grade 1- Chayse C & Nina
Grade 2 - Indianna & Jaiden
Grade 3 - Shayla-Lee & Thomas

Today, families of students in Prep to Grade 6 will be receiving letters about Learn-to-Swim. Swimming lessons will be held as part of PE lessons each Wednesday, commencing Wednesday, 22nd July for all of Term Three. Students will travel by bus to the swimming pool. We will need to have a signed consent form and the cost of $20 per student paid by Tuesday, 21st July, 2020. Payment can be made via the Qkr app.
We would like to thank the P&F for their kind donation of $4,000 and also the Sporting Schools funding which has contributed significantly to the reduction of costs for swimming for our families.
The Catholic Education Tasmania COVID-19 Safety Plan will be adhered to.
Thank you to our P & F members for participating in our meeting held on Tuesday, 30th June. Discussions during these meetings are always productive and our members are constantly seeking ways to help improve our school through the purchase of new resources for learning, assisting with showcasing students talents and strengths and building our community’s growth and cohesiveness.
Stay tuned as we have some exciting ideas in the making, and as always, we encourage new members!
Our next meeting will be held at school (in the Library) on Tuesday, 28th July at 3pm.
Wishing all of our families a safe and restful break over the next two weeks. We look forward to seeing your bright and smiling faces on Monday, 20th July.
Please note other local schools will be having a Student Free Day on this day, but we will be back and buses will be running as normal.
Also a reminder that payment for bus fares will apply from Term 3.
We are asking that families please be vigilant in checking children's hair for head lice as we have had multiple cases in different classes over the last few weeks.
Thank you to families for ensuring our students wear the SPC Winter uniform correctly. Students are being reminded that school shirts must be tucked in when arriving and departing school.
The Winter uniform will continue to be applied for Term 3.
Hats are not required for Term 3 and will resume to be worn in Term 4.
We are seeking a new Board member. The Board is the key consultative and advisory body to support the school Principal in local strategic planning, policy and operational matters.
If you would like to know more or are interested in being considered for the Board, please email melissa.thorp@catholic.tas.edu.au
School banking will recommence next term on Tuesday 21st July (week 1). Thank you all for your patience while this program has been on hold.
If you are interested in a local hockey roster in 2020, Circular Head Hockey invites expressions of interest from players of all ages from kinder to grade six, as they plan their post covid return to hockey rosters. This season Hockey Tas have offered discounted fees and Circular Head hockey are hopeful to be running rosters for a modified season in multiple age groups depending on numbers. Teams may be mixed with children from other schools and umpires and coaches may be volunteers from Circular Head hockey.
All contacts are to be made to Joanie Coker and Leah House and not through the school. All expressions of interest are to be sent via text or email directly as soon as possible to allow for planning to commence.
Joanie Coker 0427656955 joaniecoker@bigpond.com
Leah House 0409006297 k.l.house@bigpond.com
We look forward to hockey returning and can’t wait to see you all on the turf.
As per the letter home, our SRC (Student Representative Council) have suggested a Casual Clothes Day with no Gold Coin donations for the last day of the term on Friday, 3rd July in celebration of our unusual school term with all the restrictions applied.
In addition, we will be having a ‘special lunch’ day of either a Saveloy in bread or a Meat Pie, as well as the normal Strawberry and Chocolate Nippy’s drinks. Orders to be completed on the Qkr app please. If you are unable to do so, money can be paid at the office.

- Saveloy in Bread $3.00
- Meat Pie $3.00
- Gluten Free Meat Pie $4.50
- Chocolate or Strawberry Drink $2.00
Please note, no other Canteen items will be available on this day.
A reminder for families to please contact the office by 9.30am for absences and no later than 2.30pm for changes to home arrangements.
Unfortunately this year St Peter Chanel has not been invited to participate in the local Winter Sports sessions.
We will be providing an opportunity for you to discuss your child’s progress with the class teacher in Term 3, Week 3 Wednesday 5th August from 3pm - 6:30pm. A letter will be distributed in the coming weeks for online bookings. We are now allowed to have face to face meetings with families, but if a phone appointment would suit, better please indicate this when booking. Teachers will make all calls to families from school.
Quality Time over the Break
School holidays are on the horizon and Term 2 has been one of challenges and stresses we’ve not had to face before. We hope the next couple of weeks offer an opportunity to rest and recharge, for teachers and students alike before we begin Term 3.
If you are wondering how to help your kids make the most of all this free time with strategies to learn, grow and prepare for the next term, keep reading.
- Keep academics in the mix, as this doesn’t have to look like traditional classroom work. Encourage them to research something of interest or reading about a favourite subject. Cooking and following a recipe can translate into academic skills.
- Maintain a routine so your children know what to expect each day. This can help reduce anxiety, which is especially important now that kids are facing a lot of change and uncertainty. Structure and predictability let kids feel safe, stable and in control to some extent.
- Prioritise time outdoors as it is really important for both physical and mental health. Create scavenger hunts or obstacle courses in the backyard. Family walks, hikes or bike rides.
- Be smart about screens as most kids have gotten a lot more screen time than usual during the past few months. Incorporate alternative activities like art, building projects with Lego or cardboard, or even household skills.
Sure a certain amount of screen time is inevitable but screens do have more to offer than just video games and social media. There are lots of high-quality virtual resources that kids can access that are free.
Enjoy your break :)
Donna Porteus - Chaplain.
