Sunday Connection - Sunday, August 30, 2020
Gospel Reading Matthew 16:21-27
Jesus speaks of his Passion and rebukes Peter for his objection.
Family Connection
Peter was expecting a Messiah that would carry out a different plan than the one Jesus had explained. Jesus was indeed the Messiah, but his life and death would show a different understanding of what it means to be the Messiah. We too have expectations of God and our own ideas about what we think God ought to be doing in our world. Like Peter we may risk limiting our image of God by thinking only in human ways. God’s plan is always more than we can ever imagine.
As you gather as a family, talk about what we expect God to be doing in our world and in our family life. Then read Sunday’s Gospel, Matthew 16:21-27. Why do you think Peter was so upset by what Jesus was saying? Notice how Jesus reprimands Peter. Do we sometimes forget to let God be God for us? That is, do we sometimes get discouraged because God doesn’t act in our world in the ways that we expect? Pray together that your family will remember that God is always working for the world’s salvation in ways that are beyond our human imaginings. Conclude by praying together Sunday’s Psalm, Psalm 63.

Grade 3 have been exploring how the Church is a community that celebrates and makes present Jesus and his work. They created a report about significant people and researched, reflected, and commented on if this person belonged to a community of people that were united by the Spirit of Jesus, how they used God’s gifts and talents to continue Jesus’ work, and how the Holy Spirit strengthened them to continue the work of Jesus. Well done Grade 3!
On Thursday, we celebrated our final Mass with Father Christopher. Father Christopher has been called back by his Bishop and will be leaving the country at the end of the month. We would like to thank Father Christopher for his time here at St Peter Chanel and wish him all the best for the future.
The Difference Between
Worry, Stress and Anxiety
What is worry? When your mind dwells on negative thoughts, uncertain outcomes or things that could go wrong. It can be explained as repetitive, obsessive thoughts that happen only in your mind, not in your body. To help you with your worries you can write them down this can help calm obsessive thoughts. Or give yourself an amount of time in which you allow yourself to worry about a problem, when that time is up consciously redirect your thoughts. Also, when you notice that you’re worried about something, push yourself to come up with a next step or to take action.
What is stress? When an external circumstance or event exceeds an individual’s resources, this creates a physiological response. For example when you feel threatened your limbic system will fire up and release adrenaline to activate your body to respond, ie. rapid heart rate, shallow breaths, fight/flight/freeze mode. We can try to alleviate stress by getting some exercise to help the boy recover from the increase of adrenaline. Focus your energy on what you can and can’t control, then accept what you can’t. Don’t compare your stress with anyone else’s as we are all different and respond differently to stressful situations.
What is anxiety? When you are dealing with a lot of worry and stress the result will be anxiety. We experience anxiety both in our mind and our body. Above we mentioned stress is a natural response to a threat, well anxiety is the same thing except there is no threat, so in some ways it is a response to a false alarm. There is also a difference between feeling anxious (which can be a normal part of everyday life) and having an anxiety disorder. An anxiety disorder is a serious medical condition. How can you help your anxiety - limit sugar, alcohol and caffeine intake because these stimulants may have a significant impact. Try to distract yourself with your senses when you are in the middle of an anxiety episode, ie. listen to music, focus on the clouds in the sky or rub/feel a fidget item.
The Positive Behaviour Support focus/theme at SPC for this week and week 7, is: USE POSITIVE LANGUAGE
Having this specific focus allows our students to not only receive “awards” and “rewards”, it is an effective way to encourage them to engage in the desired behaviour as it focuses on a child‘s effort rather than on what is actually accomplished. When educators give genuine praise that is specific, spontaneous, and well-deserved, it encourages continuous learning.
Families will receive their Mid Year Progress report this Friday. There will be an accompanying letter for families, providing information on the reports.
