Family Connection

Children learn about love from real, concrete examples witnessed in family life. We can help children to love God and love their neighbours by showing everyday acts of love, generosity, and kindness—our own expressions of our love for God. These acts, small and large, are the expression of what Jesus identified as the two greatest commandments: love God and love neighbor.

Make a poster together as a family. Write the words Love God in the center of the poster and write the words Love Neighbour near each of the four sides of the poster. Read together Sunday’s Gospel, Matthew 22:34-40. Talk about how Jesus taught us that our love for God is revealed in the love that we show to other people. On the poster, use pictures and words to show some of the ways that your family shows their love for other people. Pray together that your family will continue to express your love for God by loving others.

On Tuesday, 20th October, we said farewell to Denise Spinks. Denise has been with St Peter Chanel for over 17 years. We thank her for her commitment and dedication to our school community and for the friendships that have been built over this time. Denise, it is sad to say goodbye, you will be missed but we wish you all the best with what is to come. 

Last night Greta Kay was presented with a Recognition Award from the Catholic Education Commission Tasmania for her Outstanding Contribution as a Friend in Catholic Schools. Congratulations Greta!

Next week we will be celebrating Socktober on Thursday, 29th October.

Socktober invites students to engage with developing world issues through the universal language of sport. Young people are challenged to ‘Sock it to Poverty’ using the world game of soccer.  Students will gain an understanding of the reality of vulnerable children around the world, kicking goals along the way to provide vital support for their brothers and sisters in India, Ethiopia, Thailand and Cambodia. Celebrations on the day to raise money for those less fortunate will be;

• Students are able to wear crazy socks to school with their school uniform for a coin donation
• Prayer liturgy led by Grade 1
• Coin line run by Mini Vinnies students at recess time - bring along spare change to see which class can make the longest line.
• Make your own Sockball competition between classes - send along any odd/old socks to assist in making the Sockball for your child’s class.
• Soccer games at lunch run by Grade 6 students

Acceptance - Be comfortable with who you are.

No-one’s perfect, but so often we compare a negative view of ourselves with an unrealistic view of other people.  Dwelling on our flaws – what we’re not rather than what we’ve got – makes it much harder to be happy.  Learning to accept ourselves, warts and all, and being kinder to ourselves when things go wrong, increases our enjoyment of life, our resilience and our well-being.  It also helps us accept others as they are.

• Be as kind to yourself as you are to others.  See your mistakes as opportunities to learn.  Notice things you do well, however small.
• What are your greatest strengths or hidden talents?

Within the next few weeks, whilst at recess or lunch we will hold an unannounced emergency practice with staff and students to test our response to a potential threat warranting the school go into lockdown. We recognised the worth to test this process. We also have plans in place to make this practice as least disruptive as possible.

Next meeting will be this Thursday, 22nd October at 3pm. New member are always welcome. 

Congratulations to Levi on winning the cake raffle at our last assembly.

In lieu of our annual Athletics Carnival we have decided to have a Tabloid Sports Day at school next Wendesday, 28th October. Students will be participating in Soccer, Basketball, Netball, Tennis and Taekwondo. We are very lucky to have certified coaches in for each of these sposrt as well as some Grade 10 students from Marist assisting. As a Canberra fundraiser, we will be selling sausages in bread for lunch. These can be ordered via the Qrk! app. There will be no canteen on this day. 

As there will be no parent involvement, we will ensure teachers post photos on SeeSaw and Facebook. 

End of year Parent/Teacher interviews are taking place on Tuesday, 27th October. A letter was sent home with instructions on how to book an appointment with your teacher. If you are unable to book an appointment via the link below, please contact the office and an appointment can be arranged.

Account statements are now being sent out via email. Please ensure that the school holds your correct information. Please contact the school office if your details are incorrect and need to be updated. 

If you prefer a hard copy to be sent out, please let us know.

Please remember to inform the school office of any changes to your child/rens medical information. Also check in to see if any medication previously supplied may have expired or needs replenishing. 

Notices have been sent home for the upcoming School Basketball Tournament. The tournament will be played in Devonport on the 7th and 8th November. Please ensure that all players have been registered prior to the tournament. The roster will be sent home once they have been completed.

Thursday, 22nd October will see the return of the Half-field and Junior rosters. These games will be played on a Thursday night over the next 7 weeks. Rosters were sent home with players at the start of the week. 

Just a reminder to families that Monday, 2nd November is a public holiday. 

A reminder that it is now a requirement for students to be wearing their full summer uniform. Student are also required to wear hats at Recess and Lunchtime
