With this week being Book Week, it seems only fitting that I should write about books and reading.
We didn’t have much money growing up, but buying books was always a possibility for my parents. Now, stores promote Kinder surprises, toys or one of the many other treats at the checkout, strategically placed there by the supermarket to tempt children and torment parents. For me it was always a Little Golden Book. It was so exciting to stand at the checkout choosing my next story. For birthdays and Christmas, it was Enid Blyton. I collected them, I cherished them, I was very protective of them...and I still have them!
I continue to be a reader. I don’t have a favourite author, as some do, I read a wide range of stories, some I’ve had to persevere with to finish, and others I’ve read several times. My real love is children's books. I love the magic of children’s stories, the characters, the illustrations, the messages. My favourite times here at St Peter Chanel are when I’m able to go into a class and read a story.
Reading is such an important skill, if not the most important. It promotes imagination and creativity. It builds general knowledge and opens up the world. It builds language, communication and vocabulary skills. It gives the greatest chance of academic success. It is the key to an independent, productive and option-filled future. It’s why reading is such a significant part of our curriculum and daily focus.
Children learn what it is to be a reader from their parents first. Reading to your children, having your children read to you, being a role model by having them see you read, building reading time into the night time routine - these are all so, so important. Children will only see the value in reading if that value is modelled to them.
Huge thanks to Mrs Angela Hall and Mrs Emma Berechree for creating such a magical space for Book Week. Our Library has been transformed into another world. Please stop by, have a look, and buy a book.
Happy reading!

Today, Catholic education has grown to 1,751 Catholic schools in Australia educating around one in five or 768,000 students and employing 98,000 teachers and staff. We recognise the contribution of all those who came before us to build Catholic education in Australia and we look to the future with faith and hope for the contribution of generations to come.
Pax Tecum,
Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Show
This Thursday, 29th of August
11:30am
Children can begin learning valuable personal safety education lessons from as young as 2-3 years old. Providing age-appropriate information around body ownership and the right to be safe from an early age allows for these messages to become part of the child’s everyday language and helps to build self-esteem and resilience in children.
Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Show stars Bravehearts’ lovable lion cub Ditto, alongside a specially trained presenter. This fun, interactive live show teaches children essential personal safety skills and knowledge using age-appropriate language, song, and dance.
Children will learn ‘Ditto’s 3 Rules’, which are:
- We all have the right to feel safe with people.
- It’s ok to say NO if you feel unsafe or unsure.
- Nothing is so yucky that you can’t tell someone about it.
