Issue 7 - 5th May 2022
May this Sunday be a very happy day for all of our mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures. May those little rays of sunshine – your children – bring you great joy for the day, and for every other day of the year too! We keep in our thoughts those who have Mums living at a distance or who have passed.
We pray to our Mother Mary to bless all the mothers of our community. May Mother Mary bless you all, inspiring and energising you by her gentle example of love and perseverance. May she guide you each day as you care and guide your children to grow and flourish.
Dear Lord,
We pray for young mothers, who give life and count toes and tend to our every need; may they be blessed with patience and tenderness to care for their families and themselves with great joy.
We pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us; may they continue to guide us in strong and gentle ways.
We remember mothers who are separated from their children because of war, poverty or conflict; may they feel the loving embrace of our God who wipes away every tear.
We pray for women who are not mothers but still love and shape us with motherly care and compassion.
We remember mothers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers who are no longer with us but who live forever etched in our memory, with love.
Amen.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole school approach to proactive, school-wide behaviour management. St Peter Chanel has been implementing this approach for a number of years. The Positive Behaviours for Learning framework is implemented to help create vibrant and positive learning environments in which all students are supported to reach their full potential. The expectations within the PBL framework typically determine the Aiming High awards each fortnight.
It is time to review our process to ensure it meets the needs of our students and community at this time. PBL outlines expectations in all areas of learning, in the outside areas such as the playground, and in the community when students are representing the school. Expectations are aligned to the school Mission, Vision and Values. In the review of our PBL process, we are beginning with behaviour expectations in outside areas and the community. As part of the review, we are also determining the values we most want the students of St Peter Chanel to understand and live by as they journey through their Primary schooling and take into their futures. We will keep you updated on the process and invite your feedback to ensure we move forward with the most effective system for positive behaviour management, and values that define our school community
An integral aspect of the PBL system is that students are able to remember and know the values of the school, the values that we want to instil in them to drive their behaviour and their choices. It was felt that the use of an acronym would be the most effective way for students to do this. As such, the following acronym will be trialled.
S.T.A.R.R.S.
Striving Together to Achieve, Respect, be Resilient, be Safe
As you can see, each of the four values – Achieve, Respect, Resilient, Safe – are covered, with specific reference to a particular context (Outside Areas, Community), and with expectations for desired positive behaviours clearly communicated. It is hoped that through the dedicated focus and teaching of these values and expectations, students will know exactly what is expected of them, and will behave accordingly. Aiming High awards will continue to be awarded in alignment with these expectations.
We welcome your thoughts and feedback on the review so far, and on other focus areas you consider to be important for our school.
Please email Kerrie with your thoughts, feedback or questions:
Today, we celebrated the feast of our namesake, St Peter Chanel. Our celebration is always a beautiful event as we come together as a school to enjoy a roast meal made from our own produce. How special!
Who is St Peter Chanel?
Peter Chanel was born in 1803 in France. He was the fifth of eight children. Peter attended to family work, leading their flock of sheep to pasture before being encouraged by a neighbouring parish priest, to pursue an education at a seminary, to become a priest.
On 15 July, 1827 Peter Chanel was ordained to the priesthood. Four years later Fr. Peter joined the Marist Fathers. In April 1836 Pope Gregory XVI entrusted the vast mission of the south-west Pacific to the Marist Fathers. Fr. Peter Chanel was amongst the first group of six priests to go to the area, based on the tiny island of Futuna.
Over the next few years, Peter Chanel worked generously among the thousand inhabitants of Futuna. He worked to build shelters and grow food. Peter Chanel's selflessness and love for the local people began to have an effect. They gave him the title, 'the man with the good heart'.
The King of Futuna became increasingly unhappy about the presence and popularity of the priests and ordered their deaths. Early in the morning of 28 April 1841, Fr. Peter at 38 years of age, was killed and was later named a martyr.
Peter Chanel’s work, together with this fellow priests, transformed the people of the Island of Futuna. In 1954 Pope Pius XII declared Fr Peter Chanel SM to be a saint.
St Peter Chanel’s Feast Day is 28 April, which is during our holiday break.
St Peter Chanel is the patron saint of Oceania.
Oceania covers: Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Palau, New Caledonia, Samoa, Micronesia, Marshall Island, Solomon, Nauru, Vanuatu, Tuvalu and Tonga.

This term we will hold an unannounced emergency practice with staff & students, to test our response to a potential scenario that staff identify a threat warranting the school go into lockdown (opposite to evacuation).
Like for fire evacuation drills, we recognised the worth to test this process.
We have plans in place to make this practice as least disruptive as able.
If you have queries you are welcome to call our Safety Officer, Simon Natoli on 0400 105 476
