Sunday Connection
God speaks to us in many ways, including through the Sunday Scripture readings. The Sunday Connection provides useful background and activities to better understand the upcoming Sunday's Scripture readings, helping you to connect the Scripture to daily life in a meaningful way.
The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, Cycle C
Gospel Reading - Sunday, June 23, 2019
Luke 9:11b-17 They all ate and were satisfied.
Family Connection
In our age of fast food and eating on the go, families often find that they are not eating meals together at a dinner table. As a family, look back over the past week and recall how many meals were eaten together and how many meals were eaten alone or on the run.
In the Bible, meals are seen as much more than a means to satisfy a physical need. The Hebrew people viewed eating a meal as a way of expressing and strengthening their relationship to one another under God's covenant. It is no coincidence that meals are often the setting of Jesus' teaching and miracles in the Gospels. In this Sunday's Gospel, we hear the story of Jesus feeding the crowd of 5,000 people.
Read this Sunday's Gospel, Luke 9:11b-17. Talk about the kinds of hungers that people have in addition to physical hunger. Describe the hungers that a family nourishes (love, compassion, forgiveness, laughter, and so on). Together give thanks for the food that Jesus gives us that we celebrate on this Sunday's feast of the Body and Blood of Jesus. Make a commitment to share in this Eucharistic meal together as a family.

Does your child need motivation to read books ... JUST FOR FUN!
Does your child read every day, not because it’s assigned, but just for fun? Some kids do, and those are the kids who do better academically, at every step of the way. Reading is so much more than words in a book. Literacy is a vital life skill, linked to better educational and employment opportunities, and greater emotional development.
An appreciation for reading doesn't just happen. It needs to be nurtured and encouraged until a child develops an intrinsic desire to read and the self-confidence to pick up a book on their own.
How to Motivate Kids to Read
It can be difficult to motivate a child who doesn’t love to read. It may even seem impossible. But it doesn’t have to be.
There are many reasons that kids don’t enjoy reading. Before you can work on motivating your child, it helps if you understand why he resists reading in the first place.
Some kids hate to read … especially struggling readers. Is reading hard? Begin by trying to identify and address areas of weakness. Is reading boring? It may be that they just haven’t found reading material that motivates them.
Don’t stop reading to your child once they learn to read. Research shows that reading to children and discussing the book as you read is the single best way to increase your child’s IQ and instil a love of reading. They out grow the simple picture books due to their imagination craving more developed plots and characters, but these chapter books are agonising work with too many words they don’t know. The solution? YOU the parent keep reading to your child.
Start with picture books with lots of words so he can use the pictures to help him stay interested and figure out words. Then move onto chapter books with pictures. Help him improve his reading by alternating pages with him during your read aloud-time or share paragraphs to keep them fascinated with the secrets of books. Look for series books, which often lure kids on to the next book and the next.
Reading is hard work, and life offers so many other ways to entertain ourselves that early reading often seems more like work than play.
Research confirms that motivation is a key factor in becoming a successful reader. When children are motivated, they read frequently, which in turn helps them become skillful readers. And children who are skillful readers learn well and deeply and successfully. Children who are motivated to read will actively seek out books to enjoy and are happy reading quietly by themselves.
